What does a general contractor actually do?

· Christo Contracting

A general contractor owns the outcome of a construction project: pricing the scope, pulling permits, hiring and sequencing the trades, passing inspections, and closing out the punch list. Instead of coordinating an electrician, a plumber, a framer, and a tile setter yourself, you deal with one person who is responsible for all of it.

What that looks like in practice

When you need one

Any project touching multiple trades — a kitchen or bathroom remodel, a basement finish, an addition, a new build — runs faster and cleaner with one contractor coordinating it. A single-trade job, like replacing a water heater, usually doesn’t need one.

When you don’t

If the whole job is one trade and one visit, hire that trade directly. A good general contractor will tell you exactly that.
